We’re a local nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving America’s cinematic heritage.
We present classic feature films, cartoons, newsreels and short subjects, together with periodic discussions of historic and contemporary cinema. The Society currently has over 200 members.

We opened the first season with CASABLANCA to a packed house at Modesto’s State Theater. We followed with the comedy classic THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and perennial favorite THE MALTESE FALCON.
Other films screened during the first season included CITIZEN KANE, THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO and MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS at Riverbank’s Galaxy Theatres.

We must rent the theater, pay for the projectionist and film and absorb all promotional costs. In 2005, the Society spent an average of $2,200 to bring each film classic here. Society membership fees are used to supplement box office revenues and support operations. The MFS Steering Committee is all volunteer; there are no paid staff members.

First, it is illegal to do so without receiving permission and making financial arrangements with the distributors, some of whom do not allow the screening of classic DVD’s in theaters. Second, we want to present the best available prints, when available, in a manner and forum in which they were intended. Unfortunately, quality 35 mm prints aren’t available for all classic films.

The majority of the first season’s films were titles that appeared in the 1940’s, but MFS choices aren’t confined to any decade or genre. The membership is regularly asked to make recommendations for future programs. Depending on community response, MFS may also sponsor additional film events in the months to come.

By completing and submitting a Modesto Film Society membership form found at this site. Memberships begin at just $15, and entitle members to substantial discounts on MFS admissions, advance information about Society presentations and other benefits.
